Let Taiwan Stand Out Let the World Come In

The 2001 World Citizens Assembly was officially launched on March 30. Mr. Douglas, President of the Association of World Citizens (AWC), came to Taiwan and hosted a press conference on March 28. Mr. Mattern had founded AWC, an international peace organization, in San Francisco in 1975, with the goal of creating on world. That year also marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. AWC has NGO status with the UN Department of Public Information (UN/DPI) and consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (UN/ECOSOC). To date, AWC has around 5,000 members in over 50 countries.

Of utmost importance, Mr. Mattern indicated that World Citizenship is not a replacement for national or regional citizenship duties, but rather a new individual responsibility in this interdependent world. The concept of World Citizenship is to help overcome many obstacles we face nowadays, including prblems of increased wars, environmental issues and severe hunger, and to focus on the effort to build a global village for the 21st century.
