REDUCTION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS

City Montessori School / PRERIT MISHRA

A Nuclear weapon is any weapon that gets its destructive power from the transformation of matter in atoms into energy. They include missiles, bombs, artillery, shells, mines and torpedoes. Common names for nuclear weapons are Atomic bombs or Hydrogen bombs. The United States was the first country to ever use the Nuclear Weapon in battle against Japan.

The major argument for a test ban was first proposed in 1950’s. Today however the prevention of radioactive fallout and the super-power arms Race is still under negotiations. Nations have thought to limit Nuclear weapons to protect people and environment from nuclear radiation as well as slow down the development of Nuclear Weapons. In 1963 Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and United States negotiated the first test limitation treaty, the Limited Test Ban Treaty. The countries who signed this agreed not to test nuclear weapons in the atmosphere in the outer space or underwater. The only testing that was allowed was underground testing. Attempts to control the number of nuclear weapons in the world began in about 1970. The Strategic Arms Limitation was a convention held by United States and Soviet Union to limit the number of Nuclear Weapons.

In 1982 the United States and Soviet Union began the Strategic Arms Reduction. Unlike the SALT Talks, these were aimed at the number of Nuclear Weapons each country could obtain. Then there was another treaty signed in 1987 which was called the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF). This treaty called for dismantling of ground launched nuclear missiles. A major obstacle in controlling nuclear weapons has been the lack of trust between two principal powers i.e. The United States and Soviet Union. Nuclear Weapons are the most powerful and destructive technology ever. Technology can ne harnessed to create a bomb, massive amount of time and energy have been invested in further increasing the destructive yield of nuclear weapons. In the beginning Nuclear Bombs were created to enact a war and pave life. Since that time a fear and power have become the threat of destruction.

Now we see that Nuclear Weapons are very dangerous to health and as well as environment. Due to these weapons only many genetic diseases such as Albinism, Haemophilia etc. are being spread. Government should make laws to reduce Nuclear Weapons. They should ban the use of Nuclear Weapons and its manufacture.
