All that surrounds us in environment the sum total of all conditions affecting life and development of living organisms is termed as environment. The development and advancement of any nation depends upon its geographical and environmental conditions. Its also depends on how well the nations has adapted its needs to those factors.
Today man has emerged as the dominant species of planet. Due to his unlimited greed for power, and riches, he has exploited the nature blindly for his personal benefits. Today, we see pollution everywhere. Diseases which were unheard of just 50 years ago are household names today.

GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT CHANGES AND CONCERNS:

　The mad race for development among various countries without a thought for the environment has resulted in present situation where the entire balance is in trouble. Release of greenhouse gases into the environment causes a rise in temperature because they trap the sun’s heat. These gases  have caused Global warming. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide[CO2], chlorofluorocarbons [CFCs] Methane[CH4] etc. the ozone layer is getting depleted due to CFCs and HCFCs used in refrigerators and aerosols. Already an ozone hole has been discovered in atmosphere over Antarctica keeping in mind the effect of global warming and ozone depletion concerns have been expressed in various international conferences and summits.

PROBLEMS AND FACTORS AFFECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

1. OVER EXPLOITATION OF RESOURCES-
　With rapidly modern lifestyles people have become blind towards the environment. Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization demand for more luxury and material things is increasing and to fulfill these demands natural resources are being damaged ruthlessly. The main cause behind overexploitation and misuse of natural resources is the uncontrolled population growth along with cause that are produced due to overpopulation. The secondary cause is rapid modernization, urbanization, industrialization, industrialization. All these have a cumulative effect on our environment.

2. POPULATION GROWTH-
　There is a dramatic rise in population. This is called as population boom. Today India alone has a population of I billion. The major causes that occur due to the rise in population are-(a)DEFORESTATION- More and more forests are being felled for economic purpose as well as for new farmlands and housing. This is putting a stress on biosphere as well as maintaining balance of gases in air. To protect our environment we should plant more trees and trees. This is called aforestation.

(b) POLLUTION- Indiscrimate development led by industrialization is choking our environment today. It is not just affecting the environment but also causing human life and health. There are two types of pollution-
(i) AIR POLLUTION-
　Air pollution is causing respiratory problems like asthama, T.B., Cancer. People are doing do to the bad smells and smokes of car, buses and other vehicles. To stop air pollution, we must make use of CNG, limited use of petrol, limited use of vehicles.
(ii) WATER POLLUTION-
　Waterbodies have been and are used as dumping places for all sorts of domestic and industrial wastes to stop water pollution, we can
‧Develop better chemical treatment facilities.
‧Make it compulsory for industries to install treatment plants for liquid wastes.

3. EXTINCTION – Deforestation may species are losing their homes. Each extinction means loss of unique gentic information and leading to feither ecological imbalance.

　We should not cut trees and we should plant more trees.

　Thus, We should plant more trees. We should not pollute the air, water and soil. These problems are inter related to each other if we solve one problem the other problem will be automatically solved. They are simple steps it does not matter whether you are rich, poor, young or old, the basic necessities are same for everyone. Our goal today is not to rule and control nature but to work with it to meet our needs with ecological understandings. Protection the environment at any cost is the need of hour.
