Protect Environment

Environment is our mother if we keep on destroying the environment then we ourselves will also become extinct. Therefore, if we don’t want the human race to end we should protect environment.

Understanding Global Warming

When we visit a doctor he records our temperature and if it is higher than normal, it means that our body is hot and ill. Similarly, when the temperature of our planet increases, it means that our planet is hot and ill. The rise in our body temperature is called fever, when same happens with Earth’s atmosphere it is called Global Warming.

When the Sun’s rays reach Earth, a group of gases called Green House gases (water-vapor, carbon-dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide) trap a part of heat and keep our planet warm enough for us to survive. Absence of Green House gases would mean that the Earth would be 30 C colder-too cold for most species. However if the levels of these gases in the atmosphere increases, they will absorb more heat and make Earth too hot for us to live! Pollution, erasing forests, burning fossil fuels, increases the level of Greenhouse in the atmosphere and this causes Global Warming.

Causes:

1.Transportation: The transport sector is a major user of fossil fuels such as oil and coal. When fossil fuels are burnt, the carbon contained in it combines with oxygen in the air to create carbon dioxide and water vapor. One liter of Petrol (Octane) produces about on kilograms of water vapor and 2.17 kilogram of Carbon dioxide. Transport is a significant contributor to global warming and fastest growing Greenhouse gas emission sector.

2.Fossil Fuels: Burning fossil fuels also produces methane and nitrous oxide,, both Greenhouse gases. One kg of methane will trap as much heat as 25 Kg of carbon dioxide, while one kg of nitrous oxide will trap 300 kg of carbon dioxide. However, their concentration is lower than carbon dioxide.

The difference we can make:

1.An air-conditioner (2.5 tonne) used for an hour generates 3 kg of carbon dioxide. If we go without air-conditioner for an hour a day, the release of 3X365=1095 kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year can be prevented.

2. Using a microwave oven for an hour generates 1.3 kg of carbon dioxide. If we eat food without using our microwave to heat it, just for one hour a week, we can stop the release of 1.3X52=67.6 kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year.

3.Using a geyser for an hour generates 3.3 kg of carbon dioxide. If we cut down the use of geyser by just an hour a day, we can stop the release of 3.3X365=1204.5 kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually.

4.One dripping tap in a house wastes 13 litres of water in a day. The wastage of water in an year 13X365=4745 litres of water. On an average a person who lets the tap run while brushing teeth wastes about 7 litres of water. If 1.3 billion Indians change this habit we could save 1.3X7=7.91 billion litres of water in just a day!

5.Using one litre of petrol produces 1 kg of water vapor and 2.17 kg of carbon dioxide. Walking, carpooling or using public transport will save at least two litres of petrol a week. This will stop the release of 2.17X2X52=225.68 kg of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere annually.

6.Estimated population of India in 2008 was 1.13 billion. If each person plants one tree in a lifetime, we can eliminate 1.13 billion ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Our everyday actions have for reaching consequences. It determines whether life on Earth will flourish or perish. One thoughtful action or a simple change in our habit will go a long way in saving our planet.
