A Global Effort

People all around the world are taking notice. The earth's climate is changing. A large part of this dramatic change can be attributed to pollution and the role it plays in global warming.

Originally from America, I have noticed an increased effort to live more ecologically-friendly. Although at times it may seem many people are taking part in the "fad" and it is a sign of status if you shop in the organic section of the supermarket, I believe it is a positive step toward making our world a better place now and for the future. There are many flaws in the system and while some people are taking notice and doing their part, I also believe many others remain careless and lazy. One thing I have noticed about living in Taiwan is the extra effort people dedicate to the environment. Specifically, the implementation of "Garbage Sorting for Zero Waste," aimed at reducing pollution and improving the quality of life. This program allows for increased recycling and benefits the environment overall. I believe the rest of the world could learn a thing or two from the Taiwanese. Though it might require a little extra thought, this system has benefited Taiwan and decreased the amount of pollution and waste.
Initiated in the United States in 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated year after year in an effort to improve the state of our surroundings. The holiday works to raise awareness of our environment and calls on all citizens to do their part to help maintain our planet. This year, I celebrated Earth Day in Taiwan with a group of individuals who devote their time and efforts to the greater good of society. This group is called Leadership Performance Coaching and, from what I witnessed, they strive to build community and foster meaningful growth in one another and humanity overall.
Our day began in Miaoli County where we visited a farm and played some ice breaker games to get to know one another. From there, we traveled a short distance where we made our contribution on Earth Day. The group consisted of about 60 people and we each planted a tree, making the area more beautiful and eco friendly. I feel absolutely honored to have been a part of this wonderful experience. I can certainly say the afternoon left a lasting impact on me and has made my time in Taiwan a richer and more fulfilling experience.

It is imperative that more people take notice and do their part to improve the environment in any way they can. The smallest contribution will never be insignificant. We are responsible for caring for and protecting nature. Please take notice and join the global effort to improve our world.
