Human Rights for World Citizens

Mulchand & Parpati Thadhani FoundationFounder/ President Dr. Sajni Thadhani

In keeping with the Mission of the 2010 world Summit on Human Rights (WSHR), and the agenda OF the Mulchand & Parpati Thadhani Foundation (The MPTF), we proclaim the universality of the HR, as declared in UDHR in 1948. Not only we must enjoy our Human Rights (HR), but also work toward protection of the same for all citizens of the world. Democracy, and therefore, liberty cannot be practiced without strict adherence to our inalienable HR. To safeguard the world citizenry and the planet, we must all demonstrate our commitment to protection of all human beings. Collective and Universal understanding that all humans are equal, must be the foundation of any work that we do.

The MPTF (USA): in Consultative Status with the ECOSOC focuses on Indian Subcontinent. Our Motto is "DEVELOPMENT AS FREEDOM". Human Rights Based Approach to Development is the engine on which we ride, to achieve our goals.

We work with Grass-Root NGO(s), CBO(s), Academia, Private Sector, and at times with Government Entities to support economic and social empowerment of the marginalized and poverty stricken people, by providing Small Grants, Consultations, Capacity Building Services and Training. Additionally, The MPTF has initiated Micro-Finance Program; to provide small loans through our partner NGO(s), who promote gender economic and social empowerment. This is done through formation of SHG(s), and by incorporating health related learning and positive outcomes. The participatory process and self-determination are the tools of operation. Women's Rights are Human Rights; and as agents of change girls and women can bring about positive changes not only in their personal lives, but also in the lives of their families as units.

To date, since the founding of The MPTF in June 2000, we have supported about 15- Development Projects in various regions in India and Bangladesh. We are now focused on West Bengal as our primary region, along with Tamil Nadu. Health, Economic Empowerment, Education, Social Development, and Gender Empowerment are the Objectives at the base of our work. MDG(s) are our Frame of Reference.

The MPTF has developed (4) Four Training Modules (TM); which are offered to multiple stakeholders. They are: 1) Human Rights Education & Learning (HRE/L), 2) Gender Empowerment, 3) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), 4) Psychosocial Rehabilitation of Mentally Ill People. All Training Modules are written and conducted within Indian Framework, and its socio-political issues. The TM is set against the backdrop of International Agendas, Conventions and UN treaties.

Stated below some of the GA Resolutions (there are many more); the Draft became official on December 10th 2009: HUMAN RIGHTS DAY.

The GA Resolution:
Follow-up to the International Year of Human Rights Learning-Having considered the report of the Secretary general contained in the document A/64/293:

1 Reaffirms its conviction that every woman, man, youth and child can realize his or her full human potential through learning about the comprehensive framework of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the ability to act on that knowledge in order to ensure the effective realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all. (63/173)
3 Calls upon the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights and the Human Rights Council to support, cooperate and collaborate closely with civil society, the private sector, academia, regional organizations, the media and other relevant stakeholders, as well as the organizations, programs and funds of the United nations, in effort to develop, in particular, the design of international strategies and/or regional, national and local programs of action aimed at broad based and sustained Human Rights Learning at all levels.(63/173)
5 Encourages civil society organizations worldwide, in particular those working at the community level, to integrate Human Rights learning in dialogue and consciousness raising programs with groups working on, and other relevant political, social and cultural issues.

To that affect The MPTF, HRE/L Training Module (since 2003), in its curriculum INCORPORATES THE BASIC IDEAS CONTAINED IN THE ABOVE STATED RESOLUTIONS; in its. The training has been conducted with NGO(s), University of Calcutta, Indian Institute of Social Sciences in Delhi, and other community entities inclusive of Women's Self Help Groups. The Three-day TM focuses on learning of the concepts, understanding of the issues involved in violation/adherence of Human Rights, and seeking solutions to problems faced by all; particularly girls/women. The Background Paper provides the basic information and helps the stakeholders to know their basic HR. The entire curriculum calls for hands on work based on real life problems, and working toward actionable solutions. It is our premise, that the more marginalized people are, the greater the need for knowledge about their Human Rights. This will facilitate their empowerment.

The MPTF with its clear-cut Mission and Agenda is based on: Human Rights Based Approach to Development and Empowerment. To that affect we will continue to work against Human Rights Violation, and removal of Capacity Deprivation. We believe in " Development As Freedom" .We are all Human Rights Worriers. As World Citizens, we must all work together to hold every one accountable when People or State Entities Violate Human Beings' Rights. We believe that " Whatever path your journey takes, do not succumb to the seduction of indifference to suffering, which authorizes evil".
