Sustainable Development and Human Rights

As a citizen of this earth, I am aware and taking care of this land as much as I can. One term that I often hear and believe that it is one of a key to protect our world is “sustainable development”. This term was first used by the Brundtland Commission and has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development sounds nice and easy to follow, if everybody realizes on how important the world means to them. However, the sustainable development is not as easy as it may seem. Every country and everybody loves to consume, or may I say, we are addicted on consuming everything that we think it is right for us, it is good for us, it is made for us and believe that it is our right to use it. Some people use it wisely, some people uses it without conscious, and some uses it because they see that other uses it and want to have that portion as well. The word “it” that I mentioned earlier can be nature, water, food, land, forest, environment or even energy. The reason for them to utilize “it” without consideration is because they think that it is their right to do so. Some people might even say that it is “human rights”. Now, let me describe a little bit about “human rights”.

Human rights are "rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled”. The concept means that all humans are endowed with certain entitlements merely by reason of being human. What is exactly the reason of being human? And can we as a human use up and destroy our nature without being blame? Is it because of “human rights” making us forget about “nature rights” and “future generation rights”? Actually, I believe that we are misunderstanding the word “human rights”. Article 1 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) stated that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood”. But I also think that we must include “nature” and “environment” into deliberation, and by this way, human rights in my opinion means “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason, conscience and awareness and should act towards one another, nature and environment in a spirit of brotherhood and without compromising the ability of future generations to fulfill their own needs”. I hope that everybody in this globe could have this in mind and do the right thing for our earth and our future generations. After all, we are all relatives and lived in the same land called “Earth”.
