To me, the biggest issue I have with people is our inability to break
from our traditions. So many people do things simply because that's
what 'people do' - things like looking down towards different races,
different genders, our natural world, animals...I have tried my best
to be even handed and open to all things, all differences, and to
listen before I speak, but the hardest intolerance for me to deal with
is the senseless manner in which we treat animals. Stolen from nature,
purposefully overbred for food, slaughtered endlessly, and all so lazy
people can have cheap food, or, perhaps so the excessively rich can
adorn themselves in fur. All of these practices are old, outdated, and
have no place in 2010. The simplest argument is that no animal
deserves to suffer at the hands of humans. Not 10 years ago, and
certainly not today.
Without understanding, without an ability to break from traditions,
we, as a people, will never move forward. Doing anything simply
because "that's what I was taught" is an uninformed view of the world.
Please, for a healthier world for us, and the animals, and the world
itself - think about all the choices you make in your life. Ask where
your food comes from, find out where your computer was made, learn
about how to not support sweatshops when buying clothing. Being
informed is the only way we can make intelligent decisions, and the
only way we can keep this world a place we want to live. You can
change anything you want to, from your diet, to your environmental
impact, to what you believe. Everything can be different, and
everything can always get better. Thank you.
