AWC Taiwan

After 1975, AWC members were spread out in over fifty countries, but it wasn't until 1999, after cultural exchange activities with the people in Taiwan, that AWC began contacting people in Taiwan on a frequent basis. Shortly after AWC Taiwan was established in 2000, AWC decided that its 2001 World Citizens Assembly (WCA 2001) would be held in Taiwan, which would be hosted by AWC Taiwan.

On July 16, 2000, AWC Taiwan held its first member conference in Taipei, which was attended by 108 representatives. They discussed the mission of hosting the 2001 World Citizens Assembly in Taipei. Dr. Hong, President of AWC Taiwan, encouraged all members to cooperate with one another and to strive for world peace.

On January 13, 2001, AWC Taiwan brought together AWC members in Taiwan to work together on the World Citizens Assembly.

Constructive Milestones

In June 2000, Dr. Hong proposed to AWC to hold the first WCA of the 21st century in Taiwan. In July, AWC endorsed the proposal, and in October 2000, a formal document was issued confirming that the 11th WCA would be held in Taipei, Taiwan from March 30 to April 3, 2001. This decision held much significance.

The Meaning to Taiwan in the 21st Century

Taiwan has encountered many difficulties in international diplomacy, and the Taiwan government has long hoped to establish a substantial channel of communication with the United Nations through the NGO system. However, there have been many limitations. Therefore, assisting an NGO to communicate smoothly with the UN and speak out for Taiwan should be a common goal for both the Taiwan government and its people.

Taiwan Expressed Its Wish for Peace on the International Stage

AWC representatives from all over the world gathered together for WCA 2001. Many world leaders, NGO members, and advocates for world peace were also invited to attend. In addition to accumulating wisdom, through face-to-face contact with these honored guests, Taiwan also expressed its wish for peace on the international stage.

Creating a Diverse and Productive International Occasion

WCA 2001 was held in Taipei in March 2001. Agendas included in-depth discussions on subjects such as "Abolish War Campaign," "United Nations and Civil Society," "Globalization," and "Using Spirituality and Technology to Build a Peaceful Century." The Assembly was co-hosted by the Tai Ji Men Qigong Academy. Tai Ji Men displayed traditional Chinese culture in its very essence, so people from around the world could get to know Taiwan much better.

Sharing Experiences on International Operating Models of NGOs

Observing and learning the operating model of WCA 2001 promoted the interaction between local and international NGOs. Furthermore, it let more and more people step outside of Taiwan, as well as let more and more friends from around the world come in. This way, understanding and sharing of experiences can become a driving force in achieving world peace.
